It’s that time of year for New Year’s resolutions, the time we vow to ourselves that this year will be different, that we will be different and stick to the plan we make for ourselves at the beginning of every year. Many of us make New Year’s resolutions with goals in mind that are wrapped around our health and fitness. It could be to lose weight, run a marathon, get to the gym 3-4 days a week, etc. etc. Does any of this sound familiar?

How many of you out there reading this blog have already come to abandon these health and fitness goals? Or maybe you have not completely abandoned them in your mind but the thought of being judged at the gym for being one of those “New Year’s resolutioners” has stopped you from already going in. If I am speaking to you, this is the time to get back into the swing of it.

One suggestion would be to join a challenge or contest. There are challenges every day of every month out there, for any health or fitness goal. If you do not have a gym membership or a challenge is not currently going on with the one you are a member of then look online or at social media. There is always a challenge out there for just about anything you could be looking for. You can find many that are free or very inexpensive. If money is a motivating factor there are challenges out there that money in could be money in your pocket if you win.

If you are in a rut in your current routine or at your current gym, you could be having a case of fitness burnout. Step back from what you are doing and where you are doing it at. You may find that your current routine really is not working for you anymore and that is ok. Change is fine if it is going to help you get to the next level. Evaluate what is working and what is not, if you find that you are burned out for several reasons then it may be time to look to change it up. That could be change in your fitness plan or that you have outgrown your current gym or program.

As a personal trainer my job is to make sure you are getting the best and safest workout you can while you are in my gym. I want you to be healthy and happy, while feeling good about yourself and feeling welcome in my fitness community. At smaller gyms, like my own, our environment offers a fitness family that is more intimate, where you will be known and held accountable. There have been numerous times I have been walking around the gym and if a member that should be there is not there I can guarantee that I am getting asked where that person is. I love it because smaller gyms are just more inclusive. Not only am I wanting you to get to your fitness and healthy lifestyle goals but everyone wants it for each other.

Listen, in the end, every step matters, every movement counts. If you have fallen off track for whatever reason, for whatever amount of time, you can change it. Start by choosing one thing and committing to it. It does not have to be all at once. You got this!
